Exactly this. There are too many people with a hidden agenda that want all criticism to dissapear and only the official voice of mainstream media to be heard. In the UK we have a culture and media minister determined to destroy the BBC and Channel 4. There is no sensible rationale behind either of these acts, only political ones. The Conservatives don't like being held to account or critcised but they can't control the two media outlets who constantly show them for what they are. Being under public ownership, ironically, means that they are the ony channels capably of giving unbiased news reporting. All of the other privately owned media is held under the leash of their millionaire owners. You won't find much criticism of the Conservative party or the their wrong-doings in newspapers owned by Murdoch et al. The only newspaper that exposes the right wing agenda and corruption rampent in politics is the Guardian. This makes it a target for ridicule by every other media channel.

It is difficult getting important, even life threatening information across when you are constantly drowned out by a media determined to silence you. The critics and nay-sayers shout the loudest when they are being proved wrong. Inconvenient facts are covered in the excrement of personal insult and dis-information. Just ask any climate activist.
