In a way it makes sense for an organism to protect the good parts of its genome. After all, if in one generation it produce a good mutation that helps it reproduce or survive, you don't want to throw that away in the next generation. I don't think it is a choice on the plant's behalf though. Just natural selection that chooses the plants that don't destroy themselves by undoing the good mutation.
