No, you are in good company. Sadly, knowing this whole thing is utter crap will not stop it happening. Enough people (let's call them idiots for now) will think it is the best thing since slice bread and jump on board. And in doing so, will drag enough others along to make the platform pay, or even make Zuckerberg even more rich.
I believe the reason for this incomprehensible desire for idiots to be part of the metaverse stems from a global phenomenon I like to call science-fictioning. Think of Star Trek technology, all those wonder toys and amazing inventions that we like to believe will happen one day. Warp drive, Teleportation, light sabres (OK that one's from Star Wars but you get my drift), interstellar transportation, holodecks.
We have come to expect our future to resemble our visions of science fiction so much that we are willing to shape reality to make it happen. And if we can't shape our real world then we will scurry off into a virtual world; our very own form of holodeck.
Unfortunately, we each have our own vision of the future based on our favourite science fiction book or franchise. This has resulted in people desperately attempting to build flying cars; not because the world needs a flying car but to satisfy our craving from a science fiction future.
This is why Musk, Bezos and Branson are trying to conquer space. They all believe that the future should be like some kind of space opera, with humanity spread out across the stars and billions to be made from asteroid mining. They don't want to hear about the physical impossibilities of interstellar travel, they want warp drives and space arks. They want to live in a science fiction future not the God awful reality we are heading into. Destroying the planet through climate change doesn't make for block-buster movie franchises where the square jawed hero gets the girl.
True there is some very notable sci-fi fiction out there that portrays very possible dystopias but people don't want to think about that. They want the clean shiny high tech future that avoids all responsibility and gives only pleasure. So they will strap on their VR headsets, swallow their nutrient feeding tubes and check out of reality.
If you want to see how that pans out, read my short story about it here. https://msfayebaker.medium.com/let-the-good-times-roll-ce14decac077
