Sadly people are only too willing to believe the deniers and politicians just so they don't need to change their lives. They will continue fiddling while Rome burns around them. That's part metaphor and part allegory by the way.

A big majority of people will refuse to believe we are in a climate emergency until the flames reach their doorstep (and sadly some people will still refuse to believe even as they escape in their SUVs through the flames).

"But what can you do (shrug)" to quote most people you point this out to. It's apathy and selfishness that will kill us all in the end. Nothing will happen until it's too late.
