Singing to choir here I'm afraid. I've written about this before but if you are looking for a great analogy I can point you to a short story by Ray Bradbury. In it there are two old ladies sitting on a porch knitting and looking into the distance. It is extremely hot and they have been reading the newspapers that tell them a great fire is coming. But they just sit there knitting and waiting. They know th end is coming but they don't feel compelled to do anything about it. It's not their business, so they just keep knitting, right up to the point where the fire races across the fields in front of them. Do they stop and try to put out the flames? no. They keep knitting even as the flames burn and consume the very wool they have used, even as it consumes them.

Ray Bradbury was very much an oracle as a science fiction writer. Watch out for the people sitting and knitting.
