There is a hidden premise in this article that implies only oil can provide all the things we need for modern living. Most of what is illustrated by the picture can be replaced either by direct substitution (e.g. electric in place of petroleum) or by adjusting lifestyles or societal norms. We don’t need our toothbrushes to be made of plastic. We don’t need to have disposable plastic cups that pollute our seas. Many plastic items made from petroleum can be made with plastic substitutes, such as plant based plastics, or replaced with reusable or recyclable materials. Environmental movements like Extinction Rebellion are not saying we need to stop living in the 21st century, they are just saying stop polluting the planet. To claim that we cannot live without oil is just laziness and self-indulgence; refusing to change in case you have to make more effort or pay more for your lifestyle. This is the kind of agenda that the oil industries are trying to push as it supports their products and helps keep their profits. It’s climate change denial by the back door by asserting that we can’t change without destroying society. It’s a can’t change, won’t change argument that is rapidly running out of steam.
